It's a little sad when I hear people lose faith in fashion even though it means the world to me. Looking back at Tavi Gevinson's blog at Style Rookie, it's clear that she has drifted from fashion with her new venture at Rookie. In an interview with a fellow Rookie editor, she recounts her experience of meeting Anna Wintour and finding the dissapointing truth about the world she thought she knew. She says,
"Basically, in this blog post, I talked about how I sat next to Anna Wintour at a Band of Outsiders show, and she asked me, “When do you go to school?” I just felt like, When do your models go to school?
I had a really weird moment of feeling like I missed my school and I missed my friends, and there wasn’t any real enthusiasm coming from the people who were there for what was going on around us, even though it should have been this exciting, creative thing. I felt funny about that experience.
In a way, fashion had been this magical thing that I was obsessed with. I was just such a fan. But then I got a little too close to it, and that was kind of saddening."

It turns out that Tavi's not the only one however. Azzealia Banks, known around the world for her hit single 212, mentioned in a recent interview that she's going to be taking a step back from fashion and focusing on what she really loves. She notes,
"I really like Alexander Wang and I really shop at ASOS, so it makes sense, but you can very easily get sucked up by the fashion world, because they bring artists in to kind of make themselves look a certain way, and as soon as someone new comes out, they've completely forgotten about you. They're so fickle...if you place your faith in the fashion world, you will get let down as an artist...so it's very, very important to remember what you're here for."

I guess too much of a good thing is never healthy for anyone. As any doctor would point out, moderation is the key to everything. If fashion changes you to the point that you don't even recognise yourself anymore, perhaps it might be good to take a step back and breathe. How about you guys?
Have you bitten more off than you can chew?
Have you bitten more off than you can chew?
I guess with Tavi she's already achieved so much in the fashion world. I mean when the NY Times has written about you, you've spoken at TED and you're a teenage editor in chief, what else is there?
ReplyDeleteGuess it's the same for fashion designers. I can't imagine what it's like for a brand to be bought out by a major fashion group. It may seem like the perfect solution for the designer but the things they make you do in order to gain their support makes me squirm. Btw how do you know Belinda?? I know her brother Bryan haha
DeleteHiya. Oh wow that was an interesting article.
ReplyDeleteI guess nowadays being a Makeup/Fashion Blogger is THE THING but then again till when?
Everything goes out of Fashion, even people. Like I saw somewhere, in Fashion Show there use to be only people from the Fashion World, I don't know, other designer, models and Fashion Editors from Magazine, then we started seeing more actor and actresses (even those that have no style what so ever) and nowadays on the front row sitting next to celebrities you can see Fashion Bloggers.
I'm just imagining the day (if it actually happens) that Fashion Designers turn their back on Fashion Bloggers, because there are tired of them, then what's going to happened to them?
I kid you not, I wish could to be a successful full-time Blogger but I doubt that it will ever happen because the competition is fierce!
Ups sorry for the long comment haha I got carried away.
xoxo
