3D printing: The new haute couture?

During lunch, Nat told me a little about her latest D&T experiment with 3D printing. At the expense of her school, she made a detailed ring out of plastic that is made to look like metal. It was then that I realised how 3D printing is becoming much more of a common phenomenon (or maybe it's just me being slow...)

I came across the couture collections last week and found to my delight, dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen's latest avant garde collection at Paris couture week. Together with MIT professor Neri Oxman, van Herpen worked on a multi-material 3D printed cape and skirt which composed of “both rubber-like and rigid elements that are 3D printed simultaneously on the Stratasys Objet Connex system.” As cool as it sounds however, I always like to know the effort and craftsmanship that goes into a dress. More so with couture as you can see with Valentino's collection that used 500 hours just for the piping of one outfit (rumour has it that roller developed carpal tunnel syndrome). Perhaps we'll get to see the results of combining the beauty of human crafstmanship with the precision of 3D printing one day. One can only hope...
