I'm not even sure I can call it hip hop anymore...
Chicago drill, trap, dancehall, acid house, industrial... The list goes on but there's no exact term to define what Kanye West has come up with in his 6th studio album 'Yeezus'. Jarring and unforgiving, West spits out verbal diarrhea that is strangely inviting in his most honest and compelling album to date. To stir things up even more, West helped produce a short promotional film inspired by American Psycho to capture the shock value that his new album promises to bring.
With power producers like Daft Punk, Hudson Mohawke and Rick Rubin, Yeezy went all the way to challenge our ears with a harsh and gruelling kaleidoscope of stripped madness. He notes how,
"at this point, when I listen to radio, that ain't what I wanna be no more."West has done the impossible by topping what I thought was already a brilliant album in his collaborative effort with Jay-Z in 'Watch the Throne'. Also known for his less successful foray in fashion (remember those controversial Giuseppe Zanotti calf skin sandals with embroidered pearls that sold for $4,968 at Colette?), West is bound to make a statement with fashion designers and music editors now clamouring to be different with his new sound. But of course, Kanye being one step ahead of everyone growls in 'I Am a God', “Soon as they like you, make ’em unlike you.”
Oh, the irony!
