I've always admired Phong Le from Le Societé Fair with his stylish sartorial pieces that are both tailored and classic. Having just been to the preview for Club Monaco's Fall/Winter 2013 collection, I've come to understand why he is a fan of Club Monaco's easy-to-wear wardrobe pieces. From what I've seen, many of the must-have items reflect an urban sensitivity that form the foundation of a modern wardrobe. So for those of you who want to spend wisely, look no further and think about investing in a party dress that you can wear over and over again.
Echoing the urban sensitivity that I was just mentioning, Fall 2013 is a collection inspired by a "uniquely modern sense of juxtaposition: the contemporary feminine persona as confronted in the photography of Cindy Sherman, awkward versus pretty, playful versus quirky, strong versus soft..." And for those of you who don't know, Cindy Sherman is a photographer/model who experiments with the concept of female stereotypes and the roles they play in society. So for a collection to be described as such, there's bound to be an outfit here fit for any occasion...
For women, timeless styles and shapes are re-worked in traditional fabrics like eyelet, clique and lace, playing off more structured fabrics like bonded cottons, quilted pieces, double knits, jacquards and neoprene for contrast. Eccentricity and clean lines run throughout the collection and are accented by details like faux texture patterns and pops of colour in African and 60s inspired prints.
And for the guys? Dressed down tailored pieces are mixed with cool knits, 60s inspired silhouettes and a nod to hi-tech functionality in traditional styles.
Come winter and the clothes become infused with a sense of festivity fit for the holiday season. One of my favourites is a feather skirt (below) in a ombré like effect that would be perfect for a night out. The collection for Winter 2013 reworks Club Monaco's classics with new shapes and proportions in dusty shades of pink and blue with the occasional pop of pink as an added accent.
"This season, I drew inspiration from the changing tones of late autumn mixed with the modern and edgy aesthetic of photographer Julia Hetta. Dark, but still pretty, futuristic yet historical." said Caroline Belhumear, lead women's designer for Club Monaco.
Luxe fabrics emerge with an autumnal flair: calk-skin bonded with wool; cashmere, shearling and stretch leather. Outerwear remains at the heart of the collection with cropped faux fur jackets accented in blocks of colour. The flared skirt above, also one of my favourites, is a fun and flirty piece that gives a classic yet modern approach to festival attire. Also worth noting is the top below with a bold ruffle that runs from the shoulder down to the waist in a contrasting black and white lycra combo.
