If you remember my interview with Baptiste G from Kapok (which you can read here), he mentioned that one of the people he's listening to right now is none other than Sixto Rodriguez, the infamous American folk musician who was said to have been even bigger than the Beatles in South Africa. Of course, I naturally wanted to watch the documentary film directed by Malik Bendjelloul and to my
surprise, JJ over at the Wanderlister invited me to the film premiere
which took place at The Loft Division in Sai Ying Pun (in partnership with Now TV channel Movie
Movie and Creative City). Thanks again JJ for inviting me!
A movie about passion and one mans
quest to find his idol, South African superfan
Stephen "Sugar" Segerman was undeterred by the impossible task
of finding the rumoured musician who supposedly committed suicide onstage. Considered as South Africa's answer to Bob Dylan, Rodriguez's songs were often used as anti-Apartheid anthems which set an example to fellow musicians who wanted to revolt against the government.
Inspiring to say the least, the night itself was also one that reminded me of those movie nights you had with close friends. A generous serving of pizza was offered courtesy of Pizza Express, and the cosy dim lit space definitely made for a great Friday night.
