Eroticism meets science fiction in Hajime Sorayama's solo exhibition at the Aishonanzuka Gallery. As an acclaimed illustration artist, Sorayama's precise and hyper realistic images are a result of his stylistic airbrush painting that "...naturally depicts minute details of human skin, lips, eyeballs, hair, even individual body hair, or the feel of leather or silk clothes, the metallicity of the robot, the reflection of light...”
With a strong focus on the female form and their sexuality, Sorayama presents a contrasting duality between the hard metallic body suits and the soft and sensual human body. With his thematic mise-en-scène that revolves around the sci-fi genre of the 70s, viewers are transported to fantasy worlds and inter-galactic travel. As a whole, his imaginary works seem to extrapolate itself from feature films of the past, not unlike Hong Kong artist Chow Chun Fai and his stylistic appropriation of popular cinema. The result is a mesmerising display of sexuality, romance and a celebration of the female figure.
Definitely an exhibition not to be missed!
